NIT Rourkela’s Counselling Services Saved 8 Lives Last Year: A Beacon of Hope for Students

The Institute Counselling Services (ICS) at NIT Rourkela played a crucial role in saving eight student lives last year, according to officials. Since its inception in 2017, ICS has grown into a strong network of counsellors, psychiatrists, faculty advisors, and peer mentors.

“Over the past year, ICS has successfully intervened to save eight lives through its coordinated efforts,” said R. K. Biswal, head of ICS. “We conducted over 2,000 sessions and supported nearly 1,000 students.”

While depression and emotional distress were major issues, most students initially approached ICS for academic self-improvement. Other concerns included time management, focus, low self-esteem, and career anxiety.

ICS sometimes recommends a temporary academic break and involves families when needed. Students can return only after submitting a medical fitness certificate and passing a psychiatric evaluation.

A structured peer mentorship system ensures that every 10 first-year students are guided by a trained senior student. Hostel and faculty advisors are also trained to detect emotional distress early and notify ICS for follow-up action.

With these efforts, ICS continues to offer timely and life-saving support to students, setting an example for other institutions across the country.
